Technical Summary This document describes Multicast Router Discovery for both IPv4 and IPv6. For IPv4, Multicast Router Discovery is a direct translation of ICMP Router Discovery (RFC 1256); for IPv6 it is an extension to the Router Advertisement messages of the ICMP Neighbor Discovery protocol. Multicast Router Discovery performs two tasks. It allows devices such as IGMP-snooping switches to discover multicast routers in a protocol-independent way; without Multicast Router Discovery such devices have to snoop each type of routing protocol Hello to guess which ports point to multicast routers. In addition, it allows multicast routers to convey configuration parameters, such as the SSM group range, to all hosts on the subnet.
