I would like to clearly document that the authors of the code fragments have not given the IETF license to code under BSD.

This is a DISCUSS just because I want to talk about this on the call, not because I think something needs to change in the draft. It is largely a meta issue about code fragments.

Do all the authors of the code fragments grant us permission to publish them under the BSD?

PS - I fully support gathering these all and updating to latest syntax.

1) (For discussion on the telechat) Will publishing this as Informational lead to downref problems in the future? Would there be problems with publishing it as PS?

2) The Updates meta-data (what appears as an Updates line in the upper left information block) should be filled out. The proto writeup says updates/obsoletes - is anything actually being obsoleted?

Title: New ASN.1 Modules for CMS and S/MIME
ID: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-smime-new-asn1

Intended Status: Proposed Standard

1.a - Sean Turner is the document Shepherd. He has personally reviewed
the document and asserts that it is ready for IESG publication.
1.b - The document has been reviewed by key WG members and has passed WG
LC. There are no concerns about depth or breadth of the reviews.
1.c - I so no need for wider review.
1.d - There are no specific concerns that the AD and/or IESG should be
aware of.
1.e - The WG consensus is solid.
1.f - There has been no threat of appeal.
1.g - The document satisfies all ID nits.
1.h - The document splits its references.
1.i - The document has an IANA consideration and it is consistent with
the main body (there are no IANA considerations).
1.j - All of the ASN.1 modules compile. Sean Turner used the a2c
compiler to verify that the modules compile. The ID authors have also
indicated that a different compiler has properly compiled the modules.

Technical Summary

The Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS) format, and many associated
formats, are expressed using ASN.1. The current ASN.1 modules conform
to the 1988 version of ASN.1. This document updates those ASN.1 modules
to conform to the 2002 version of ASN.1. There are no bits-on-the-wire
changes to any of the formats; this is simply a change to the syntax.

Working Group Summary

This ID was discussed on the SMIME WG mailing list and at IETF 69, 70,
and 71 (SMIME hasn't met since IETF 71). All SMIME WG Last Call issues
have been resolved. Discussion during SMIME WG Last Call demonstrated
working group consensus. This document has SMIME WG support.

Note that the issue raised in PKIX on this document's sister document
draft-ietf-pkix-new-asn1-05.txt (obsolete vs update) was not an issue in
the SMIME WG. However, it is expected that whatever the result is that
the SMIME WG ID will be on the same track.

Document Quality

This document obsoletes/updates a number of RFCs from the SMIME WG. The
quality of the draft is comparable in quality to its predecessor.

Personnel

Sean Turner is the document Shepherd. Tim Polk is the responsible
Security Area AD.
