4. 802 New Work summary
https://ieee802.org/PARs.shtml
802.1DD -Standard - Resource Allocation Protocol, PAR and CSD
This standard specifies protocols, procedures, and managed objects for
resource allocation in bridged local area networks for dynamic creation
and maintenance of data streams. This standard supports control
signaling through data paths and/or through separate control paths in
support of centralized control.
802.1ASed - Amendment - Fault-Tolerant Timing with Time Integrity PAR and CSD
This amendment specifies protocols, processes, procedures, functions,
mechanisms, and managed objects to enable fault-tolerant timing by
increasing the availability of the time and adding time integrity. This
is achieved using two or more generalized Precision Time Protocol (gPTP)
domains, multiple time distribution paths, the local oscillator clock,
and a time selection function with individual processes for times that
have interdependencies and times that do not have interdependencies.
Fault-tolerant timing includes fault-tolerant time generation and
distribution.
802.1DP - Standard - Time-Sensitive Networking for Aerospace Onboard Ethernet Communications, PAR Extension
This standard specifies profiles of IEEE 802.1 Time-Sensitive Networking
(TSN) and IEEE 802.1 Security standards for aerospace onboard bridged
IEEE 802.3 Ethernet networks. The profiles select features, options,
configurations, defaults, protocols, and procedures of bridges, end
stations, and Local Area Networks to build deterministic networks for
aerospace onboard communications.
802.1AB-2016-rev - Standard - Station and MAC Connectivity Discovery, PAR
The scope of this standard is to define a protocol and management
elements, suitable for advertising information to stations attached to
the same IEEE 802 LAN, for the purpose of populating physical topology
and device discovery management information databases. The protocol
facilitates the identification of stations connected by IEEE 802
LANs/MANs, their points of interconnection, and access points for
management protocols. This standard defines a protocol that a)
Advertises connectivity and management information about the local
station to adjacent stations on the same IEEE 802 LAN. b) Receives
network management information from adjacent stations on the same IEEE
802 LAN. c) Operates with all IEEE 802 access protocols and network
media. d) Establishes a network management information schema and object
definitions that are suitable for storing connection information about
adjacent stations. e) Provides compatibility with the IETF Physical
Topology Management Information Base (MIB).
802.1AC-2016-rev - Standard - MAC Service Definition, PAR
The scope of this standard is to define the Media Access Control (MAC)
Service provided by all IEEE 802(R) MACs, and the Internal Sublayer
Service (ISS) provided within MAC Bridges, in abstract terms of the
following: a) Their semantics, primitive actions, and events; and b) The
parameters of, interrelationship between, and valid sequences of these
actions and events.
802.11-2024 - Standard - Wireless LANs, PAR Revision
This document contains a draft revision PAR to incorporate accumulated
maintenance changes (editorial and technical corrections) and roll up
approved amendments into the 802.11 standard. The purpose of this
standard is to provide wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and
moving stations within a local area. This standard also offers
regulatory bodies a means of standardizing access to one or more
frequency bands for the purpose of local area communication.
802.11bf - Amendment - Enhancements for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Sensing, PAR Extension
This amendment defines modifications to the IEEE 802.11 medium access
control layer (MAC) and to the Directional Multi Gigabit (DMG) and
enhanced DMG (EDMG) PHYs to enhance Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
sensing (SENS) operation in license-exempt frequency bands between 1 GHz
and 7.125 GHz and above 45 GHz.
802.16t - Amendment - Fixed and Mobile Wireless Access in Narrowband Channels, PAR Extension
This project specifies operation in licensed spectrum with channel
bandwidths greater than or equal to 5 kHz and less than 100 kHz. The
project specifies a new PHY, and changes to the MAC as necessary to
support the PHY. The amendment is frequency independent but focuses on
spectrum less than 2 GHz. The range and data rate supported by the
narrower channels are commensurate with those of the base standard, as
scaled by the reduced channel bandwidth. The project also amends IEEE
Std 802.16 as required to support aggregated operation in adjacent and
non-adjacent channels.
802.15.4ae - Amendment - Ascon cryptographic algorithms, PAR and CSD
This standard defines the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control
(MAC) sublayer specifications for low-data-rate wireless connectivity
with fixed, portable, and moving devices with no battery or very limited
battery consumption requirements. In addition, the standard provides
modes that allow for precision ranging. PHYs are defined for devices
operating in a variety of geographic regions. This project will add
additional cryptographic algorithms Ascon-128/Ascon-128a for the IEEE
Std 802.15.4 for link encryption and authentication.
802.15.9a - Amendment - Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman Over COSE (EDHOC) KMP, PAR and CSD
This standard defines security key management extensions to address
session key generation (both 128-bit and 256-bit key lengths), the
creation and/or transport of broadcast/multicast keys, and security
algorithm agility. This standard maintains backwards compatibility with
IEEE Std 802.15.9-2016. This amendment will specify the use of EDHOC
(RFC 9528) KMP for the IEEE Std 802.15.9.
5. Review current coordination items
Potential Areas for IETF/IEEE802 Coordination, v44
Item 25. Layer 2/Layer 3 Interaction for Time-Sensitive Traffic
János Farkas reported that the DetNet WG has recently published RFC 9566
(Deterministic Networking (DetNet) Packet Replication, Elimination, and
Ordering Functions (PREOF) via MPLS over UDP/IP), RFC 9550
(Deterministic Networking (DetNet): Packet Ordering Function), RFC 9551
(Framework of Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) for
Deterministic Networking (DetNet)), and RFC 9546 (Operations,
Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) for Deterministic Networking
(DetNet) with the MPLS Data Plane).
János Farkas added that work in the recently-closed RAW WG has been
folded into DetNet and is progressing. The RAW architecture document
(draft-ietf-raw-architecture) is expected to get a second Working Group
Last Call after IETF 120.
draft-ietf-detnet-controller-plane-framework should go to Working Group
Last Call soon.
Item 27. Development of YANG models in the IEEE 802
Éric Vyncke noted that Rob Wilton as stepped down from the IESG. He will
check with Mahesh Jethanandani about taking over ownership of this item.
Russ Housley noted that there has still not been any progress toward
coming up with a common string format to represent MAC Addresses in YANG
modules.
Item 29. Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE)
Éric Vyncke suggested that this item should be re-opened to track the
progress of transferring RFC 8110 to IEEE 802.11. The draft describing
this transfer is draft-wkumari-rfc8110-to-ieee.
Item 33. Capability Discovery
Progress on this item is waiting on a rechartering of the LSVR WG.
Item 34. Reliable and Available Wireless (RAW)
The group agreed to close this item.
Item 35. MAC Address Device Identification for Network and Application Services (MADINAS)
Juan Carlos Zuniga reported that P802.11bh and P802.11bi both have
drafts that are addressing most of the issues. Dorothy Stanley said that
P802.11bh has completed its initial SA ballot and is projected to be
ratified by the end of 2024.
On the IETF side, draft-ietf-madinas-mac-address-randomization passed
Working Group Last Call and was submitted to the IESG for publication.
The use cases document (draft-ietf-madinas-use-cases) is also
progressing; it documents some of the existing solutions and also points
to some of the work that has moved to the RADEXT WG.
Juan Carlos Zuniga noted that work in the MADINAS WG will be coming to a
close soon. Russ Housley suggested that when that happens, the group
should look at closing this item.
6. Future meeting plans
There were no pressing topics that would require meeting during IETF
120. The next meeting will be a teleconference sometime around October
2024.
