From: Adcock, Chris [mailto:cadcock@epcglobalinc.org] Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 17:21 To: bwijnen@lucent.com; brc@zurich.ibm.com Cc: Hogan, Bernie Subject: SLRRP Gentlemen, I am writing to you regarding the recent request within the IETF to form a work group to develop a specification on the SLRRP protocol. We have reviewed the matter at length and feel that the situation has arisen due to philosophical differences within the EPCglobal Reader Protocol (RP) group, coupled with the fact that the EPCglobal standards development process is still in the early days, and especially so compared to the IETF. At the same time the EPCglobal community has, through its experience to date, now gained a better understanding on what should be incorporated into the RP specification. We feel that the correct course of action for the EPCglobal community is to charter a new RP initiative that will focus on all of the requirements and to provide the necessary process that will ensure a successful conclusion to the work. I am sure you appreciate that having two work groups working on the same specification is not ideal and will likely be challenging and problematic. The issues are only compounded when it spans two different standards organizations. In my capacity as President of EPCglobal, I would ask for your support in avoiding these potential problems by not creating a separate work group. It will only cause confusion in the marketplace and impact the work we undertake on behalf of our members. We invite the IETF community to review our work product and provide commentary which will ensure that we are not creating any issues relating to IETF standards. Thanks you in advance for your consideration of this request. Yours faithfully Chris Adcock
