Body
Dear Colleagues,

We would like to inform you that the Broadband Forum (BBF) has initiated a new
project titled "Application of L4S to Broadband Networks" under the Network
Architecture Working Area.

The project aims to define the application of L4S in Broadband networks,
considerations on deployment and introduction strategies that would allow
operators to support phased deployments that focus on the most beneficial parts
of the network first on the journey to a full end to end capability, noting
that L4S does not re- quire implementation in all network elements to start to
deliver benefits.

Scope:

- Documenting the applicability of L4S on service and application use cases
that may utilize the Broadband Network, referencing the appropriate RFCs. -
Specifying functional requirements to support L4S, including at minimum,
requirements for the Residential Gateway, Access Nodes, Ethernet Aggregation
and Service Gateway (i.e., AGF/BNG) whilst not adversely impacting existing
traffic. - Including wholesale deployment models. - Investigating the
applicability and impact of Layer 2 network segments and overlay and underlay
tunnels on the deployment of L4S along with resultant requirements. - Defining
the minimum network capabilities required to support L4S on a Broadband Network
/service. - Identifying the most beneficial points for first deployment of
native L4S support in the network - Exploring options for configurations and
capabilities that might be deployed at points within a broadband network that
will support L4S even before native L4S feature support. - Identifying and
defining any changes required to BBF data models. - Providing recommendations
and best practices for monitoring the performance relating to the introduction
and ongoing monitoring of L4S.

Given the foundational role of IETF RFCs (e.g., RFC 9330, RFC 9331, RFC 9332)
in the development of L4S, we anticipate the need to reference the work of
IETF. We welcome any input or participation from IETF members who are
interested in contributing to this work.

The project has just started. We will keep you updated on our progress and look
forward to a productive co- operation with you.

  Sincerely, Lincoln Lavoie,
Broadband Forum Technical Committee Chair
