I personally found it valuable, when attending my first in-person IETF meeting, to have the drinks/dinner session (on the first night?), and to meet some in leadership as well as other newcomers

Given what Alexa said, perhaps for the coffee breaks it would be good to have a broader pool of experienced (if not truly leadership) volunteers who are willing to be social with the newcomers. Might need a bit of direction given to the volunteers for what's expected of them.

@John Klensin Having a \"mentor\" for those sorts of folks (and they needn't be technical mentors) would be a good thing.

To briefly revisit the question of newcomer satisfaction with the meeting itself, there is a general question in the meeting survey that asks, \"Overall, how satisfied were you with the IETF 112 meeting?\" and we can filter those results to see how newcomers respond to that question and compare that to how longer-term IETF participants answer it. (But of course that doesn't give us information on satisfaction with other areas, such as mail list participation)

Nick, something we did years ago and then abandoned was to have reports from each area at every IETF. What they are working on, what the key issue are, etc., The reasons it was abandoned, given scheduling, etc., were clear, but that was extremely useful, not just in newcomer education but in introducing long-term participants to things they probably should be following.

we could ask the ADs to do a summary, or to nominate a WG chair from their area who would be able to attend (and I expect many WG chairs could do a 2 minute summary about a relevant topic in another wg as well)

@Nick: Indeed. And that has been proposed two or three times, including in the form of a per-Area report to be sent out a week or so ahead of an IETF meeting, but the IESG usually claims (with considerable justification) to be too busy.
