MTU is maller problem. Much bigger problem on how big headers ASIC may process. It may be as low as 128bytes.

OK. But it is well known that some platforms could process all headers (summary) as low as 128bytes, the best platforms are restricted to 384bytes. Hence, 1280bytes looks extremally theoretic. When I have seen BIER IETF presentation in 2016 - it immideately come to my mind.
