Minutes SIPPING WG at IETF 65 Minutes edited by Gonzalo Camarillo Based on notes by Spencer Dawkins and Steve S. Meeting chaired by May Barnes and Gonzalo Camarillo Slides presented included in the proceedings WEDENSDAY, March 22, 2006, 1300-1500 Topic: Agenda Bash Discussions led by: Chairs The chairs announced that Dean Willis and Rohan Mahy have stepped down as SIPPING chairs (Dean will continue cochairing the SIP WG though). Mary Barnes will substitute them. Gonzalo will continue cochairing the WG. The chairs announced that the work to keep the draft database at softarmor up to date will be discontinued. While in the past it was an essential tool for the WG, at this point it is too much work for too little gain. From now on, the WG will use the official IETF tool instead to track its drafts. The WG will also try and take advantage of new IETF tools that may be developed in the future (e.g., a tool to assign reviewers to drafts which is needed by the Gen-Art folks). With respect to the status of WG items, most of them are progressing fine. Many of them were published since the last IETF or are in the RFC Editor's queue. There are also a few WG items that are with the IESG at this time. The chairs indicated that, from now on, they intend to have a strong focus on the current WG items. Later, the WG will be focusing on a few important (probably new) charter items at a time. The idea is to concentrate the WG efforts on not too many drafts, as opposed to trying to tackle a large number of documents at a time. This will probably have an impact on the format of the face-to-face sessions, which will most likely have fewer but longer slots allocated to WG items. The chairs drew the WG's attention to a few individual submissions. There was consensus in the room that draft-hasebe-sipping-race-examples-00.txt deals with an interesting issue that the WG may want to tackle as a WG item in the future. The chairs presented draft-garcia-sipping-file-tranfer-mech-00.txt. This draft had already been presented in MMUSIC, but since its presentation had been originally announced in SIPPING, it was presented in SIPPING again just in case there were folks with comments that did not attend the MMUSIC session. The conclusion was that this work is interesting and that should be progressed in the MMUSIC WG because it deals with offer/answer issues. Topic: Configuration Framework Split Discussion led by: Dan Petrie Relevant documents: draft-ietf-sipping-config-framework-08.txt draft-ietf-sipping-xcap-config-00.txt draft-ietf-simple-xcap-diff-03.txt Dan presented the draft. There is an open issue: how does a device know whether or not the profile server supports XCAP? There were discussions on how to signal support for XCAP. There was consensus in the room that XCAP should not be mandatory. The chairs told Dan Petrie, Rohan Mahy, and Jonathan Rosenberg to get together after the session to discuss different ways forward and report to the list. The discussions on this issue were resumed at the end of the session, with the same conclusion. Topic: Use Case and Considerations for SIPPING Config Discussion led by: Jan-Francois Mule Relevant documents: draft-channabasappa-sipua-config-mgmt-00.txt The draft was presented. There were discussions on what it means to manage a device. Dan Romascanu, Operations and Management Area Director, asked the author to coordinate this work with the management framework being worked in that area. Topic: Consent Framework Discussion led by: Gonzalo Camarillo Relevant documents: draft-ietf-sipping-consent-framework-04.txt draft-camarillo-sip-consent-method-00.txt draft-camarillo-sipping-consent-reg-event-00.txt draft-camarillo-sipping-consent-format-00.txt draft-camarillo-sipping-grant-permission-00.txt draft-camarillo-sipping-list-state-00.txt Gonzalo presented the drafts. There were discussions on some of the issues presented. At the end of the presentation, there was a discussion on the complexity of the solution. The conclusion was to modify the solution so that it is more likely to be implemented. The authors got an action point to meet with some of the interested parties and propose a way forward. Gonzalo presented the proposed way forward at the beginning of Friday's session. The room agreed that the new modified proposal is a good way to meet the requirements in a simpler way. The authors will work on documenting the new proposal. Topic: Session Policies Discussion led by: Volker Hilt Relevant documents: draft-hilt-sipping-session-policy-framework-01.txt draft-hilt-sipping-policy-package-01.txt draft-ietf-sipping-media-policy-dataset-00.txt Volker presented the drafts, which are WG items but were submitted as individual submissions because the authors missed the deadline for 00 drafts. There will be discussions on the mailing list on whether user agents will use PUBLISH or SUBSCRIBE bodies to send information to the policy server. Topic: ToIP Discussion led by: Arnoud van Wijk Relevant documents: draft-ietf-sipping-toip-04.txt Arnoud presented the draft. The WG had agreed to request the publication of this draft but in the last minute one of its coauthors claimed in the mailing list that the draft was not finished and that there was still a lot of work to do. It seems that this draft did not get enough attention in the WG (almost no one in the room had read the draft). The chairs assigned Tom Taylor to perform a thorough review of this draft and report back to the mailing list. Additionally, the chairs will review the draft as well. At the end of the session, the discussion of the config framework resumed (see Configuration Framework Split topic above). The second SIPPING session ended. FRIDAY, March 24 9, 2006, 0900-1130 Topic: Agenda Bash Discussions led by: Chairs The chairs drew the WG's attention to a few individual submissions. Gonzalo presented a way forward for the consent work (see Consent Framework topic above). Topic: Multiple Dialog Usages in SIP Discussion led by: Robert Sparks Relevant documents: draft-ietf-sipping-dialogusage-01.txt Robert presented the draft. He will revise the draft in order to fix a few issues. That revision will be WGLCed. Future work on this area affecting existing specifications will take place in SIP. Topic: Limiting the Damage from Amplification Attacks in SIP Proxies Discussion led by: Robert Sparks Relevant documents: draft-sparks-sipping-max-breadth-00.txt Robert presented the draft. There should be discussions on the list before SIPit 18. Topic: An Efficient Loop Detection Algorithm for SIP Proxies Discussion led by: Byron Campen Relevant documents: draft-campen-sipping-stack-loop-detect-00.txt Byron presented the draft. There were discussions on what is the exact problem that needs to be resolved. It could be computational complexity, or the fact that implementations have problems parsing Via entries that have not been generated by them. There is a need to clarify what the problem is. Topic: Requirements for IMS service identification Discussion led by: Andrew Allen Relevant documents: Email thread initiated by the following message: http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/sipping/current/msg10562.html Andrew presented the 3GPP requirements, which are documented in 3GPP TR 23.816. Folks pointed out that it is good that the IETF and 3GPP collaborate on this type of architectural decisions, and not only when some protocol needs to be extended. The conclusion was to continue the mailing list discussions on this topic. If needed, a draft listing requirements could also be produced. Topic: Overload Requirements Discussion led by: Jonathan Rosenberg Relevant documents: draft-rosenberg-sipping-overload-reqs-00.txt Jonathan presented the draft. It was pointed out that this work needs to be coordinated with the transport area. They have a long experience in dealing with congestion control. There was consensus in the room that this is important work and that the WG may want to work on it as a chartered item in the future. Topic: SIP Identity Usage in Enterprise Scenarios Discussion led by: Steffen Fries Relevant documents: draft-fries-sipping-identity-enterprise-scenario-02.txt Steffen presented the draft. It seems that this draft falls in the scope of RAI or SIP rather than SIPPING. Topic: Requirements from SIP Session Border Control Deployments Discussion led by: Jani Hautakorpi Relevant documents: draft-camarillo-sipping-sbc-funcs-03.txt Jani presented the draft. There was consensus in the room that this is important work that the WG will probably want to tackle as a WG item in the future. Additionally, Jon Peterson, Area Director for SIPPING, stated that this work is very important and that it should move forward. Topic: Same Session Header Field Discussion led by: Salvatore Loreto Relevant documents: draft-loreto-sipping-dialog-correlation-00.txt Salvatore presented the draft. There were discussions on whether the same functionality can be implemented by using 3pcc (i.e., a single dialog from the controller to the remote party) or the Join header field. The use of Join may imply that mixing is performed, and thus it may not be appropriate, but the session control functionality is the same as in Join. 3pcc works, but the call flows are more complex. Discussions will be continued in the list. Topic: New SIP Headers for Reducing SIP Message Size and 3G Wireless Support in the SIP/SDP Static Dictionary for SigComp Discussion led by: Haseeb Akhtar Relevant documents: draft-akhtar-sipping-header-reduction-00.txt draft-akhtar-sipping-3g-static-dictionary-00.txt Hasseb presented the drafts. There were discussions on whether or not SigComp is enough. The conclusion was to involve the ROHC WG to understand whether or not SigComp's compression performance is enough and whether something else is needed. Topic: The User-registered Routable UA URL Discussion led by: Peili Xu Relevant documents: draft-xu-sipping-uruu-00.txt Pelli presented the draft. The conclusion was that the requirements need to be revised in order to understand them better. Part of the requirements may be met by existing mechanisms. Topic: Requirements for batch Subscriptions Refreshment Discussion led by: Xiao Wang Relevant documents: draft-wang-sip-brs-00.txt Xiao presented the draft. It was noted that this problem is considered important by operators deploying SIP-based presence systems in cellular environments. Discussions will continue on the list. Topic: A method to override the barring services Discussion led by: Rocky Wang Relevant documents: draft-rocky-sipping-override-barring-00.txt Rocky presented the draft. It was mentioned that draft-schubert-sipping-saml-cpc-00.txt is also related to this work. Discussions will be continued on the list. The second SIPPING session ended.
