Multicast Mobility (multimob) Chairs: TBD Internet Area (int) Directors: Jari Arkko Mark Townsley Internet Area Advisor: Jari Arkko Security Area Advisor: Marshall Eubanks . Multicast mobility (multimob) proposes to deal with the problems and inefficiencies that arise from using IP multicasting in mobile environments. The scope will be limited to the group management and proxy mobile IP protocols. Both source specific multicast (SSM) and any source multicasting will be considered. Work related to and requiring modifications of multicast routing protocols (PIM-SM, PIM-DM, etc.) is out of scope. Both IPv4 and IPv6 versions of the solutions will be developed in the same or separate documents. IGMPv3/MLDv2 is originally defined for wired networks with shared links. Also mobile nodes have to save battery by entering into the dormant mode. Therefore dormant mode operation needs to be supported by IGMPv3/MLDv2. There are also concerns related to the latency of joins and leaves that IGMPv3/MLDv2 provides. The latency needs to be minimized. There are currently deployed extensions to reduce the join and leave latencies. In Multimob these issues will be addressed and IGMPv3/MLDv2 for mobile environments will be standardized. Different strategies for solving these issues will be pursued. The simplest strategy would be documenting already implemented and deployed fast join/fast leave extensions. The WG needs to ascertain whether the existing solutions are sufficient to solve this problem, and if not, come up with better solutions. For supporting dormant mode, the WG needs to define protocol changes that may simply modify the timers in the protocols or support additional message types. The unicast mobility protocol Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) does not currently support multicasting. PMIPv6 will be extended to support multicasting. Also PMIPv6 IPv4 support protocol will be extended to support multicasting with IPv4. It is a goal of the new working group to enhance PMIPv6 to render the protocol more deployable in new and upcoming Mobile IPTV networks. IGMPv3/MLDv2 will be extended to support host mobility. Mobile IGMPv3/MLDv2 featuring reduced join and leave latencies, dormant mode and point-to-point link support will be standardized. In doing its work, the Multimob working group will work closely with NETLMM working group and will coordinate IGMP/MLD extensions work with MAGMA and MBONED working groups.
