IETF 95 Internet Protocol Performance Metrics (IPPM) Minutes

Brian Trammell (co-chair)

Note-well

Stuff thats done
Lots of progress and we've had the most RFCs published between meetings.

Almost done:
PDM WGLC
Metric Registry
Model-based Metrics

WG drafts

Nalini Elkins - PDM Options draft-ietf-ippm-6man-pdm-option

Al Morton - Might be useful to have this circulated in v6ops (IPv6 Operations).
Mark Ackermann - No red flgs found in 6man (IPv6 Maintenance).
Bill Cerveny is shepherd for this draft.

Al Morton - Registry drafts draft-ietf-ippm-metric-registry and draft-ietf-ippm-initial-registry

URI columns includes a human readble format in addition to machine readable format.
Add reference to Hybrid and use HYB_ prefix in the registry.
Using mPlane methodology for naming now.
Brian T - With mPlane, we decided on the structure and then it was too late to incorporate feedback. We should pause this draft for implementation and then incorporate the feedback from the implementations.
Phil Eardley - Would like feedback in regards to the ordering and if the naming looks okay.
Greg Minksy - How will the fields of the each subtype be enumerated? Do we need a sub-registry for this?
Brian T - Look at RFC 7013.
Al Morton - Traceroute should be included to find path.
J. Ignacio Alvarez - Traceroute should not be used as intermediate delay detection.
Brain T - Should decide on a way to use traceroute. Poll who knows about RTT.
Bert - RIPE Atlas has data about DNS queries, traceroutes, RTT calculations.
Al Morton - Should add IPv6 examples.
Brian T - Would like to get feedback from the mailing list on traceroute.

Al Morton draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-yang

Greg Mirsky - Document the port ranges.
Brian T - What about Application level changes.
Fred Baker asked about an IPv6 example in the document.
Al Morton - Need to add there

Al Morton - Model Based Metrics draft-ietf-ippm-model-based-metrics

Al - We rewrote the draft because people would not be able to comment.
Brian T - WGLC - Targeting for June 1, 2016.
Al - Proposals for Flow & Throughput measurement were reviewed in ITU-T. Study Group 12 about 16 years back. None of the specific methods reached consensus, but there was agreement on the *requirements* for methods of measurement in this category. ITU-T Recommendation Y.1540 Section 6.12 is the reference for these requirements. The MBM draft conforms to the Y.1540 requirements for methods, and adds others.

Free copies of Y.1540 and the new Appendix related to this topic are available at http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-Y.1540/en

Brian T - Would be nice to get this finished in Berlin.

Individual Drafts Targeted for Working Group Consideration

Joachim Fabini draft-morton-ippm-2330-stdform-typep

Joachim - Would like comments.
Nalini - would like to remove IPv6 options in the name.
Brian T - Treatments of IPv6 extensions is not important.
Brian T - (As chair) Hums on adoption of the draft Will add a milestone. Yes => Loud hum. No => Silence. Will follow up on the list.

Gregory Mirsky draft-mirsky-time-format

There are two timestamp formats.
Use the zero field to determine type of format.
Brian T - Support for adding PTP to TWAMP protocol and adopt as WG item Milestones - Hum in Support - Yes.

Giuseppe Fioccola - Coloring / Hybrid Measurement Approaches

Brian T - Not clear, which bits of these are in charter or which are off-charter? IPPM - p3m
Brian T - Not clear what we would do with the framework drafts
Greg Mirsky - Would like to use the draft as foundation for IPPM
Brian T (as individual) - Why build on 6812 protocol? Cannot see us extending Cisco Prootocol SLA
Greg Mirsky - Draft should become WG draft. Makes life easier
Brian T - It's better to have it as an independent stream
Brian T - Who would commit to review these drafts if they commit to review the draft?
Brian T - Who thinks this has missing pieces that need to be filled in?
Mirja K - Do you need the whole framework or would you prefer something smaller?

Lightning Talks

Gregory Minksy - Control and monitoring in TWAMP draft-bailmir-ippm-twamp-dscp-ctrl-mon-00

Would like to work with collaborators

Gregory Mirsky draft-mirsky-ippm-twamp-light-yang-02

Vinayak Hegde - Service KPIs using TWAMP draft-spv-ippm-monitor-methodology-services-kpi-00

Gregory Mirsky - You should look at the work on the OAM group
Erik Nordmark - Service chaining is not a good idea
Vinayak Hegde - We have proposed it as a concept but that is not necessary and binding to do that. We are looking at simple checks only.
