RFC SERIES OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE (RSOC) Minutes of the December 10, 2014 RSOC Meeting Reported by: Cindy Morgan, IETF Secretariat ATTENDEES --------------------------------- - Nevil Brownlee - Heather Flanagan (RSE, non-voting) - Tony Hansen - Joe Hildebrand - Bob Hinden - Alexey Melnikov (Chair) - Cindy Morgan (Scribe) - Ray Pelletier (IAOC Liaison, non-voting) - Robert Sparks REGRETS --------------------------------- - Sarah Banks - Joel Halpern (Lead) MINUTES --------------------------------- 0. Review of minutes The minutes of the 8 October 2014 and 13 November 2014 RSOC meetings were approved. 1. Agenda bash No new items were added to the agenda. 2. SoWs, RFPs, and RFI 2.1. DOI and Website Heather Flanagan reported (and Ray Pelletier confirmed) that the DOI RFP is ready to go to the IAOC with a recommendation. Heather Flanagan reported that she is setting up meetings next week to discuss questions with the vendors who responded to the website RFP. 2.2. Format Heather Flanagan reported that the XML2RFC Version 3 vocabulary draft and the RFC Format Framework draft both need another update before the SOWs can go out for public comment. 2.3. Fonts Heather Flanagan reported that the font situation is more challenging than initially anticipated. At the suggestion of the Tools Development Team, she has created an RFI on this topic, and has one lead on a person who may be able to provide some guidance. 3. Format update Heather Flanagan reported that the XML2RFC Version 3 vocabulary draft and the RFC Format Framework draft are both approaching a point were coding from them can begin soon. 4. RPC update: http://www.rfc-editor.org/reports/ Heather Flanagan noted that while the SLA numbers were closer to normal in November, she expects to see another dip in December, as editors spent much time working directly with authors as a result of the writing lab experiment held at IETF 91. Alice Russo is returning from maternity leave this week, and Heather Flanagan plans to have a face-to-face meeting with the RPC team in Seattle in late January 2015. 5. Report out from IETF 91 5.1. Writing Lab feedback Heather Flanagan reported on the results of the writing lab experiment held during IETF 91. Ten sessions were held (out of 18 possible slots; not all were expected to be filled). A survey was distributed to the authors afterwards. - 7 of 10 authors replied to the survey. - 7 of 7 respondents returned positive feedback in their surveys. - 7 of 7 respondents replied positively that they could use what they learned. - 6 of 7 respondents would participate in this activity again; the 7th would recommend it to others. - There were mixed reviews on the amount of time allotted; some authors wanted more than one hour. - There was positive feedback on editor knowledge and on the handout authors were given on things to remember in the future. Other suggestions from the survey included: - Expanding sessions to two hours. - Setting up a mailing list to post language questions to. - Using an example draft that has common issues. - Considering online sessions during and between IETF meetings. Heather Flanagan noted that overall, there is an interest in the community for continuing this sort of effort. However, since it does require a significant amount of effort form the RPC (thus affecting their ability to publish documents in the queue in a timely fashion), Heather is looking at ways to balance this. This topic will be on the agenda for her face-to-face meeting with the RPC in January. 5.2. RPC Vendor Selection committee kickoff meeting The RPC vendor selection committee met during IETF 91; the focus was largely on the service level agreements. Heather Flanagan has asked Adrian Farrel and Ole Jacobsen to take the SOW and find out if it would make sense to outside vendors not already embedded in the IETF process. Heather added that the timeline for the vendor selection committee remains unchanged. 5.3. Stream Manager meeting Heather Flanagan met with the stream managers during IETF 91. They discussed the RPC SLAs, and are working to get examples of how the numbers would play out in different scenarios. Brian Haberman is helping with the statistical analysis; Heather hopes to have the numbers in a few weeks. 5.4. IRSG dinner Heather Flanagan was invited to attend the IRSG dinner at IETF 91 to discuss the upcoming format changes. The IRSG (as well as the IAB and IESG) volunteered to help with testing as things become more concrete. The streams are discussing amongst themselves what the changes will mean for them and how they process documents. 6. Miscellaneous Heather Flanagan reported that she attended the recent International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers workshops. She believes the workshops were helpful; there was a lot of discussion about what authors are asking of publishers, and Heather expects that will be useful in helping anticipate the needs of I-D authors in the future. Heather Flanagan will send a report on the workshops to the RSOC. She noted that her favorite topic was the look at traditional metrics versus alternative metrics. 7. AOB There was no other business, and the meeting was adjourned.
