Pronouns: he/him
Claudio Allocchio (born in Crema in 1959) is an Italian physicist and computer scientist.
After working at the Trieste Astronomical Observatory, including creating the IUEARM system for the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite, and at CERN in Geneva, he has been working on computer networks and related services since the 1980s, participating in the creation of the Italian Research and Education network GARR.
He promoted the development of Internet mail systems and their global integration, both technically (COSINE projects, TERENA working groups, and the IETF) and organizationally, establishing the first self-governing body of the Italian Internet community (the MAIL-ITA Forum). For this reason, he is considered one of the "old boys" who created the global Internet.
He later co-founded the Italian Naming Authority for the management of the ccTLD ".it," of which he has served as President since its inception. He was subsequently appointed a member of the Commission for the Rules of the ccTLD ".it" at the Italian National Research Coouncil.
He is a Senior Manager and Advisor of GARR, the Italian Network for Education and Research, and was Vice President of TERENA (now GEANT) from 2001 to 2007 He has collaborated with the IETF since 1990, where he was the coordinator (and now a member) of the Application Area Directorate (now the ART Directorate), and is an editor of several RFCs and chaired a number of WGs He is one of the creators of the advanced, high-quality, ultra-low-latency videoconferencing system "LoLa," which allows musicians thousands of kilometers away to interact in real time over the network.
In 2019, he was awarded the Vietsch Foundation Medal of Honor "for the clear achievements and long-term benefits he has contributed to the research and education networking community throughout his career."
In April 2021, he received the e-Culture Innovation Award from the association of South American research networks RedCLARA for his contribution to the adoption of technologies in cultural activities in the field of performing arts, an award he won again in 2023.
Between 2020 and 2024, he has been responsible as chairman of the Community Programme of the GEANT association, which brings together European research and education networks, and since November 2023 he is a member of the GEANT Board of Directors.
