Abstract
When travelling on public transport, such as busses in London, mobile phones often lose GPS signal.
Busses themselves usually carry a more accurate gps detection device, attached to a mini computer which dynamically updates the location of bus on a sign for passengers to see.

Combining this problem with the advanced gps  detection of the bus, we can relay the location of the mobile phone using a hidden wifi network.

Extending this to those without WifI access the standard goes one
stage further, by offering a hidden wifi network with a standard name,
such as .location. The principle being that mobile devices can
look for this network in cases where GPS data cannot be collected. It
is hoped that this will allow those using mapping services to know
where they are when travelling on underground trains etc.

1. Introduction 1.1 Motivation

When using public transport my phone  frequently gives the error  message "gps location lost". For a period of time i do not know where i am and have to rely on the signs within the bus to see my location to know when i am at my destination.  The gps locations on public transport are superior to the gps location devices on many mobile phones, it would be nice if we could use this advanced gps module to communicate to the phone out current location.

This can be achieved by relaying the location of the bus over a hidden wifi network, called .location.

1.2 I have written a c++ program to do this available at https://www.github.com/rydal/overground.
It uses the Pistahce library and the gpspipe program to ascertain the location of the public transport vehicle and relays this over a wifi network, configured using hostapd (not included).


1.3 Security considerations In order to prevent spoofing of the
location wifi network a self signed key can be used to ensure connections to the website are not spoofed.
