Group description
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) specification work is split across multiple working groups in the IETF. The BGP Directorate is organized as a team of experienced BGP implementers and operators from within the IETF community with the objective of doing technical review of BGP specifications across WGs. The BGP Directorate assists the ADs by raising the quality of BGP specifications before they are submitted to the IESG for publication.
BGP directorate reviews WG drafts for their impact on core BGP protocol behavior, such as modifications to the BGP finite state machine, message formats, encodings, best-path selection procedures, definition of new path attributes, etc.. Reviews are expected to also focus on the correctness, failure handling, robustness, scalability, and performance aspects of the protocol specifications. Reviewers may suggest improvements and alternate approaches for the consideration of the authors and the WG.
The objective of the BGP directorate is to provide timely technical reviews to the authors and the WG to ensure major problems are identified and rectified in time before implementation and deployment happens. As such, the Early Reviews can be requested during the document’s progression in the WG before the start of WGLC. BGP directorate shall not accept Last Call or Telechat reviews unless requested by ADs.
