Change of responsible AD and thanks to Samita
Tommy Jensen will become the responsible Area Director for IoT-DIR.
Big thanks to Erik! :-)
Welcome, Tommy! :-)
Big thanks to Samita for her contributions to the IoT Directorate. :-)
Reminder about IoT directorate reviews
Sometimes we get answer to review requests from directorate members that
they "are not experts on the topic". You don't need to be expert, or
often even particularly well informed, of the topic of the draft, but
provide general review with focus on IoT-related topics. Chairs usually
try to assign reviews based on who we think would know the area best,
but sometimes such persons are already authors / active participants or
we don't find a good match and will do best-effort assignments.
Remember to accept/decline the review request as soon as you can so we
know if we need to ask someone else to review.

-
ACE (Loganaden Velvindron / Tim Hollebeek)
ANIMA (Sheng Jiang / Toerless Eckert)
ASDF (Michael Richardson / Lorenzo Corneo)
- Had approx monthly interims morning Europe time; difficult for US
but only option to get US, Europe, and Asia - ASDF WG will not meet in Shezhen
- Next WG interim meeting on March 11th to follow up two WGLC
documents - The ASDF working group just published its first RFC 9880, which is
the core specification of the semantic definition format, SDF for
short - Non affordance draft (not the affordance, like button, but other
stuff) - Non-Internet-Connected Physical Components (NIPC) draft progressing
- Hackathong work planned for Vienna
-
The number of adopted working group documents increased a lot since
the latest iotdir meeting. The working group has now 7 working group
documents, 2 of which are in working group last call (ending early
March)- Most of these documents are providing extensions to the core SDF
specifications. For instance, SDF protocol mappings, instance
information, non-affordances, and links - Another draft discusses the use of SDF and some of its
extensions for the creation of digital twins - Finally, NIPC provides a standardized API for interacting with
heterogeneous IoT devices from different ecosystems, e.g., BLE,
Zigbee, using SDF for device modeling
- Most of these documents are providing extensions to the core SDF
-
2 Internet Drafts related to SDF not yet adopted as working group
documents, but they are in the working- One draft defines a compact notation for defining SDF documents,
while the other draft provides SDF enablers for API translation
using SDF
- One draft defines a compact notation for defining SDF documents,
CBOR (Barry Leiba / Christian Amsüss / Paul Hoffman)

CoRE will meet at IETF 125, in a 2-hour session on Friday, March 20
-
After IETF 125, plan to resume interim meetings in April
COSE (Ivaylo Petrov / Michael B. Jones)
DetNet (Lou Berger / János Farkas)
RFC Editor has almost completed the work on Reliable Available Wireless
documents:
RAW Technologies: RFC-to-be 9913
RAW Architecture: RFC-to-be 9912
The WG has started to work on DetNet queuing solutions by asopting some
of the queueing solution proposals.
IOTOPS (IOT Operations) (Alexey Melnikov, Henk Birkholz)
LAKE (Mališa Vučinić / Renzo Navas)
- LAKE did not have an interim meeting, will meet at IETF 125 Shenzhen
(asked for 1h30 but we got 2h00) -
Adopted documents (5 hits) some advancing since last IETF.
- draft-ietf-lake-edhoc-psk waiting for formal analysis (
https://openwsn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAKE/pages/1932394542/Formal+Analysis+Process
) - draft-ietf-lake-edhoc-impl-cons, waiting for implementation
experience - draft-ietf-lake-edhoc-grease is actually waiting for an
implementation
- draft-ietf-lake-edhoc-psk waiting for formal analysis (

Rechartering to include quantum-resilient solutions, almost there
- Status: Start Chartering/Rechartering (Internal Steering
Group/IAB Review) - https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/charter-ietf-lake/
- Quantum-Resilient: drafts from 5 different groups of people (2
seem to be active)
- Status: Start Chartering/Rechartering (Internal Steering
RATS (Kathleen Moriarty/ Ned Smith)
ROLL (Aris Koutsiamanis/ Ines Robles)
- ROLL will not meet at IETF 125
- enrollment-priority was submitted to the IESG
- dis-modifications merged with dis-modifications-use cases
- nsa-extension in progress
SCHC (Alexander Pelov / Pascal Thubert)
SCIM (Aaron Parecki / Nancy Cam-Winget)
SUIT (Akira Tsukamoto, Jacqueline McCall)
TEEP (Tiru Reddy / Nancy Cam-Winget)
IRTF
T2TRG (Ari Keränen / Carsten Bormann)
Nothing specifically planned for IETF 125. Number of people on site
limited. Operating in interims.
Still working on setting up an interim about interaction between AI
agents and IoT infrastructure; some reluctance about making WIP
presentations.
draft-irtf-t2trg-taxonomy-manufacturer-anchors completed RGLC, but
didn't get any additional feedback; silence may be consensus here, but
we'll need to extend the RGLC to get some.
Work is also ongoing on enabling containerization/mobile code for IoT
devices; there might be another interim for that as well.
A number of informational documents are in author processing;
draft-irtf-t2trg-security-setup-iot-devices is now close to RGLC
and needs review.
New/planned IETF/IRTF IoT activities
CB: opportunity for SUSTAIN RG and T2TRG people to meet around IETF 126.
Will announce when we know more. Interaction with IoT device and
controlling energy use -- good to get forward motion here. Organized by
SUSTAIN RG.
Other SDOs
MCR: IoTSF typically meeting in October. Some anniversary coming 2-4 day
event coming. Will know around end of April. Will be happy to report on
this. Also Device Identity forum making progress around representation
around security icons, like certificates and quantum safety. Will
probably have something to discuss in Vienna. Open for anyone to
participate.
SLICES-RI project & SLICES-PI (Remous-Aris Koutsiamanis)
RK: SLICES project with testbeds with homogeneous interfaces and
different granularity (from bare metal to containers) for different
experiments. Approved now for 2nd phase.
Idea to do reproducable research for digital infra.
For example, FIT project with outdoor/indoor real/isolated environments.
Idea, depending on scenario, to be able to repeat scenarios. And high
automation.
Remous-Aris responsible for outreach to other orgs.
If people have ideas on where and whom could talk to, e.g., help to do
validation of ideas using this infra. People in the WGs who think this
would be interesting avenue.
EB: was part of FIT IoT lab some years back. Continue to use this to
validate new proposals for IETF protocols. Can point to a few reports
and papers. Could be good idea as blueprint. Also see
https://www.iot-lab.info/ (in the process of being SLICEd ;)
RK: idea is to not restrain just with French nodes. One in Madrid with
satellite and LoRA for example. Have own micro satellite in orbit.
AK: good idea to drop info to the directorate list and perhaps pointer
to earlier similar use like Emmanuel pointed out
RK: will have something more mature in summer; can then share details
